Let’s be fair. This is USC. I think that “thing” was correct and it was really the word “things” after the dash that was in error. Clearly this is a promo. Who wants to go to a school where you are going to have to learn two things to get out of there when you can go to sunny California and only learn one? Not the students USC is after, that’s for sure.
Maybe she’s referring to her major? A lot of people only have one major. It’s not elegant English, but it could be ok.

not only does usc underpay their atheletes, the students attending there are only required to learn one thing to graduate.
