    I had a feeling it might be. It seemed too sad otherwise. But could someone please tell me why? (It still hurts, deliberate or not.)

    I wonder if society can’t be a collective noun? Like “class” — which means it can have a singular verb, depending on usage.

    Yes, but the ‘is’ refers to the days (which are numbered), not the society. If that were not the case, then the whole sentence would be nonsensical and it would FAIL.
