    Original meaning of “constipate” (from the OED), more or less contemporary with the specific meaning of “to confine the bowels”:

    1. trans. To crowd, pack, or press closely together; to condense, thicken (liquids); to make firm and compact by pressing together. Obs.

    In medical parlance:

    2. Med. {dag}a. To contract, bind together, constrict (the tissues); to close (the pores or vessels).

    So it’s not as huge a fail as it might be.
