I’m not sure categorizing something where someone obviously messed with the letters after the store put them up really counts as a fail…
‘Thru’ is actually the American variant for ‘through’. It’s part of the Noah Webster tradition of changing American English so that it is not British.
I know a few McDonald’s workers. That sign is very accurate.

You guys actually change English just so it’s not British?! You lie. It’s obviously to make things easier to spell. Obviously it messes around with derivatives (how do you get cenTRal from cenTER?) but hey, most of you can’t spell your watered down version of a proper language, so let’s not get into all the reasons why American ‘English’ sucks. People in the rest of the English-speaking world are actually familiar with ‘thru’ - McDonald’s uses that spelling on all its stores. There’s no attempt at all to adopt local practices.
In my more cynical moments, I see it as “cultural imperialism”

Um…Jimminy? If you can drop the “e” off the end of “centre,” certainly we have every right to take it out of the middle.
I’m studying lingustics, and I find it kind of offensive to say that American English is not a proper language, by the way.
In my opinion there’s no real “proper” way to speak a language since there’s so many dialects. It’s just what works best for the population speaking that language. For example, I have a friend from Argentina who tried to speak Spanish with a guy from Columbia and he could barely understand what the guy was saying, the dialects were so different. To say that, oh, the only proper way to speak English is the British way, or the only proper Spanish is the kind they speak in Spain, the only proper French the kind they speak in France, etc, etc, is a bit ridiculous and elitist.
So THAT’S what happened to Skeet Ulrich. What a way to go.
