Fortunately, this isn’t the official translation. The official translation has her name as “Aeris”. But apparently some gamers tend to think that fan translations are often better. Clearly this post argues that this is not the case.

This isn’t from the official English version of FFVII. This is a fanslation fail.

Interestingly, my copies have the same line in it (just passed that point in a recent play session), and as I have the original release from 1997 (US) and the Greatest Hits re-release, I’m thinking that perhaps your judgment on what does/does not constitute the “official” translation is the real failure here.

Just because the name slot says, “Aerith,” doesn’t mean the game didn’t originally name her, “Aeris.” Players do, on occasion, rename their characters in FF games, y’know. ;)

…copies have the same line in THEM…

Foot, meet mouth. The two of you will get along swimmingly, I’m sure.

Because no one has ever gone in and changed, “Aeris,” to, “Aerith,” during the naming phase. Nope. The PSX/PC versions didn’t allow for that at all. ;)

You could be right–I too have the 1997 PSX version but haven’t played through recently. It isn’t impossible, that’s for sure.

Y’know, I apologize for getting snarky with you. Bad couple of days on the home front–I believe my ire is showing unnecessarily. Sorry about that.

Still and all, the PSX version of 1997 was plagued with grammatical errors and minor spelling difficulties; whether these errors were fixed in the PC version, I am unsure–I have it, but I never got all that far along with it.

I have this game, and I laughed so hard when I saw this in the game that I nearly passed out. xD
