Bwah ha! That’s kind of how they pronounce it, though, so maybe it’s–naw, it’s still awful. But hilarious!

  4. Jack on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:52 am

The real irony is having “Mississippi” and “literacy” in the same sentence.

    • Karen on October 15th, 2008 at 8:46 am

      That’s exactly what I was thinking :-)

    • lucy on October 20th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

      HA.
Excuse me, but I would like to point out that all of the people from Mississippi, like ME, and not IGNORANT.

      • justme on October 23rd, 2008 at 9:08 am

What? I think a bit of clarity is needed. Not to start a flame, but seriously, if you are defending your state’s literacy rate by including yourself in the ‘not ignorant’ category, try reading your post before hitting ‘send’.

That said, I agree, using the whole state name is long-especially in headlines-and a lot of ‘Missippians’ use the abbreviated name with no shame or irony.

      • T on November 6th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

I can’t really believe that ALL of them are not ignorant. Maybe you meant to say that NOT ALL are ignorant???

      Yeah. Thanks, Lucy.

      We’re not all illiterate.

And some of us even know how to use computers.

      :/

  5. Mississippi Joe on October 2nd, 2008 at 11:40 am

well It just goes to show ya that everyone loves the associated press!

    • The English prof on October 2nd, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Um, the AP didn’t write that headline. The editor of the local (perhaps Mississippi) paper did.
The story came from the wire service, but in a newspaper setting, all the headlines are local.
      :)
      I do love the AP.

  6. sitboaf on October 2nd, 2008 at 11:42 am

Most frequent answer in last year’s “Spell Your State” Contest: “Misipi.”

    • Taylor on November 10th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

      I doubt that.

EVERYONE knows how to spell Mississippi.

  7. L on October 2nd, 2008 at 2:12 pm

I learned to spell Mississippi when I was a little kid. It’s easy… and fun!

    • Aeterna on October 2nd, 2008 at 6:26 pm

      M! I! S-S-I! S-S-I! P-P-I!

(I remember many of my fellow students especially enjoying the P-P part.)

  8. Linnee on October 2nd, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Why yes, only a year ago, everyone spelled it
    Mispi. Progress!

  9. Anonymous on October 2nd, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Hmm…although unlikely, it’s possible that the name was shortened in order to fit the headline in the paper as well as for possible editing/formatting issues.

But that is unlikely, and even if it were true, they should have had the foresight to see the irony. Maybe change the font size?

    Really unlikely.

  10. woahhhface on October 2nd, 2008 at 4:49 pm

It would be an irony win because it’s not like they were trying to be ironic and failed at it. Their irony actually succeeded.

Mississippi – the state that always makes Louisiana feel better about itself…

    • jordanwb on October 3rd, 2008 at 3:03 pm

      Lol

    • Matthew on October 17th, 2008 at 10:40 pm

You know..as funny as that really is..

I live in Louisiana. I’m fairly intelligent. It’s always been sort of funny and pathetic that the rest of the nation and world look down upon us Louisianians. Granted, there are stupid people here. Sure. But there are stupid people everywhere. I promise. And you mustn’t leave them out when making fun. So, I encourage making fun of others as well.

Have a great day, from Thibodaux, Louisiana

PS: You probably couldn’t pronounce Thibodaux correctly, dumby. ;)

      • 'murkin dood on November 5th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

“Thibodaux” is easy: Tib o doe

      • Geralyn Mott on October 15th, 2011 at 5:55 pm

dear matthew. i was born and raised in louisiana and yes, there are stupid people here. but sadly, they are out numbered by the IGNORANT.

For a site that prides itself on English, I’m surprised many have not read one of the language’s most unique American voices. Ever heard of William Faulkner? All his stories are set in Missippi.

    • Paul on October 15th, 2008 at 3:27 am

I had a 4.0 GPA graduating from high school and still have one in college. I’ve lived in Mississippi for two years now. NOT everyone hear is as stupid as you’d expect. In fact, I’ve learned a few things myself. Give the Southern states a break, eh?

This is where we are in America today. This is a reflection of the obsession by the Zionist controlled media to diversify America, despite obvious proof that every movement for social change that required diversity, has been a complete failure.
No, not for the diversitees,*those receiving(blacks and minorities) but for the diversitors, well, white people. Who can argue that the civil rights movement has been successful? Blacks still commit the vast majority of violent crime in the US(mostly against whites) and still suck up 70% of the social benefits (while contributing less than 15%. But the liberal fags in Washington claim that the whole thing has been a resounding success. Now whites are subjected to news programs that focus on the continuing struggle of the black race in america ” Black in America” while their has been absolutely no coverage of the impact that the “niggafying” of America has had on the people that made this country great in the first place..whites!
The revolution is coming people stockpile weapons for that day..

  31. Sid on November 3rd, 2009 at 10:33 am

    Who let the racist in?
    He is not welcome.

Anyone from England can see two fails here: the obvious “missippi” and the fact that “program” is correctly spelt “programme”

    @diversitymyass

racist indeed. i agree with you that documentaries like that shouldn’t be made because all they seem to do is give a lousy impression and are a waste of everyone’s time. However, it is sad to see that such an ignorant, racist, and bigot attitude is still being propagated today by idiots like you. everyone is equal. stop blaming things on race and get to the bottom of the social issues that lead to the statistics you try and quote.

  38. Allie on December 3rd, 2009 at 12:13 am

Wow, sam, you must have a lot of free time. And during that whole rant about white vs black people, all I really took in as worthwile information was you incorrect usage of the word “their”. So just face it. People are like rainbows. We are all different colors, but in the end, everyone is just dreary old rain. Depressing analogy, but that doesn’t make it any less true!

  39. Caitlin Adams on December 3rd, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Actually I don’t find it ironic, because this one of the hardest words to spell. people get confused when they try to spell this word. I don’t think I’ll be able to spell it

And an editor actually missed this. Go figure!

  41. Emmieluvs on December 25th, 2009 at 12:25 am

Ok…to whomever took the time to type that huge, long, offensive, racist rant: really? Um…did you read that before you posted it? It was both completely off subject and uncalled for. The only reason “the white man” is responsible for the “construction of the country” is because he OPPRESSED PRETTY MUCH EVERY OTHER RACE. if you are bored/offended by documentaries that tell the story of Blacks struggling, here’s a sollution: DON’T WATCH THEM.

Oh–and get a dictionary. You’re on English fail blog–you should be able to tell the difference between “their” and “they’re”
