Let’s just say they have a long way to go still.

Apparently not enough improvement.

Bwah ha! That’s kind of how they pronounce it, though, so maybe it’s–naw, it’s still awful. But hilarious!

Comment by Jack

The real irony is having “Mississippi” and “literacy” in the same sentence.

Comment by Karen

That’s exactly what I was thinking :-)

Comment by lucy

HA.
Excuse me, but I would like to point out that all of the people from Mississippi, like ME, and not IGNORANT.

Comment by justme

What? I think a bit of clarity is needed. Not to start a flame, but seriously, if you are defending your state’s literacy rate by including yourself in the ‘not ignorant’ category, try reading your post before hitting ’send’.

That said, I agree, using the whole state name is long-especially in headlines-and a lot of ‘Missippians’ use the abbreviated name with no shame or irony.

Comment by T

I can’t really believe that ALL of them are not ignorant. Maybe you meant to say that NOT ALL are ignorant???

Comment by Taylor

Yeah. Thanks, Lucy.

We’re not all illiterate.

And some of us even know how to use computers.

:/

Comment by Mississippi Joe

well It just goes to show ya that everyone loves the associated press!

Comment by The English prof

Um, the AP didn’t write that headline. The editor of the local (perhaps Mississippi) paper did.
The story came from the wire service, but in a newspaper setting, all the headlines are local.
:)
I do love the AP.

Most frequent answer in last year’s “Spell Your State” Contest: “Misipi.”

Comment by Taylor

I doubt that.

EVERYONE knows how to spell Mississippi.

Comment by L

I learned to spell Mississippi when I was a little kid. It’s easy… and fun!

Comment by Aeterna

M! I! S-S-I! S-S-I! P-P-I!

(I remember many of my fellow students especially enjoying the P-P part.)

Comment by Linnee

Why yes, only a year ago, everyone spelled it
Mispi. Progress!

Comment by Anonymous

Hmm…although unlikely, it’s possible that the name was shortened in order to fit the headline in the paper as well as for possible editing/formatting issues.

But that is unlikely, and even if it were true, they should have had the foresight to see the irony. Maybe change the font size?

Really unlikely.

Comment by woahhhface

It would be an irony win because it’s not like they were trying to be ironic and failed at it. Their irony actually succeeded.

Mississippi - the state that always makes Louisiana feel better about itself…

Comment by Matthew

You know..as funny as that really is..

I live in Louisiana. I’m fairly intelligent. It’s always been sort of funny and pathetic that the rest of the nation and world look down upon us Louisianians. Granted, there are stupid people here. Sure. But there are stupid people everywhere. I promise. And you mustn’t leave them out when making fun. So, I encourage making fun of others as well.

Have a great day, from Thibodaux, Louisiana

PS: You probably couldn’t pronounce Thibodaux correctly, dumby. ;)

Comment by 'murkin dood

“Thibodaux” is easy: Tib o doe

Comment by lucy

are you serious?
you don’t know anything about the south.

Comment by Faulkner

For a site that prides itself on English, I’m surprised many have not read one of the language’s most unique American voices. Ever heard of William Faulkner? All his stories are set in Missippi.

Yeah, everyone (in UK) knows it’s ‘programme’

Comment by Joe

You should have seen it before it was improved!

Comment by Jason

Had to read it twice before I picked it up. I fail.

Comment by John

How many of you have ever visited Mississippi?

Comment by Paul

The real question is who would want to have the dubious privilege of visiting Mississippi in the first place?

Comment by Taylor

Certainly not a Presidential Debate or anything.

Nothing pleases me more than seeing spelling mistakes in newspaper articles about literacy!

Soon the human race will be mine!

Listen: I lived in the North, ranging from big cities like Chicago and little Upstate villages in New York, for fifteen years. I had a 4.0 GPA graduating from high school and still have one in college. I’ve lived in Mississippi for two years now. NOT everyone hear is as stupid as you’d expect. In fact, I’ve learned a few things myself. Give the Southern states a break, eh?

Comment by T

“NOT everyone HEAR…?” Hmm…
