Hotel Fail
Submitted by Roland who says, “I asked for an explanation and the only one that I could get was that, as traditional Chinese is written from left to right, then someone must have had the bright idea to do the same to the hotel name. I pointed out that it used to be that Chinese was indeed written from left to right but also top to bottom. I got a blank stare back!”
You mean right to left. English is read and written left to right, Chinese (and Japanese and a few other middle easter languages) is read and written right to left.
LINGUISTIC KNOWLEDGE FAIL.
Horizontally, said languages are read/written from left to right. Vertically, they are read/written in columns from right to left.
The Semitic abjads are read/written from right to left.
Short stretches of horizontal text (signs, newspaper headlines) are often written “vertically” with columns one character deep, that is, right-to-left. In the sign in the picture, the Chinese is running right-to-left, for example, and that’s perfectly OK. Extended text (books), when written horizontally, is always left-to-right.
And of course, in antiquity, when Latin and related scripts were written right-to-left, the letters were usually reversed to indicate the fact.

In the past Chinese was indeed written from right to left, whether horizontally or vertically. To write horizontal Chinese from left to right is a convention that is less than 100 years old and seems to be a decision based on harmonizing Chinese and English for advertising purposes.
Indeed, when I was small there were still some old people who could not understand any Chinese that is written from left to right.

I was cracking up when i just saw this.
It took me a couple minutes to figure out it says Tourism Trend Hotel, but then I read the bottom and it said to read it left to right(took it as right to left like it should of said) and just cracked up. There is a cleaners place by my house that is spelled like this too.
I’m Chinese, and I don’t see any buildings with right-to-left writing on it these days, English or Chinese D: And the writing on the red banner is in left-to-right writing, which is confusing.

Umm… China and Japan aren’t Middle Easter countries… Let alone Middle Eastern countries… ;P
“Tourism Trend Hotel”…not really suprising. If you read it backwards from right to left it’ll make sense. I’ve visited countries on trips and have experiance those kinds of wording and in fact, if you complain to a foriegner about their spelling they’ll surely tell you YOUR language is wrong. If you get my drift.
